Filing a glass claim in Alberta isn't complicated, but a few details can save you time and money — particularly the difference between repair and replacement, and the deductible-waiver rule that most drivers don't realize exists.
The two-minute summary
- Get comprehensive coverage on your policy → most glass damage is covered.
- If the damage is repairable (a chip), most insurers in Alberta waive the deductible.
- If the damage requires replacement, your standard comprehensive deductible applies.
- Use a shop that direct-bills your insurer and you never write a cheque.
The "free chip repair" rule
Most major insurers in Alberta — Intact, TD, Aviva, Wawanesa, Co-operators, and others — waive the comprehensive deductible specifically for windshield repair (not replacement). Their reasoning is purely economic: paying $40 to fix a chip is cheaper than paying $700 to replace a windshield later. If you have a chip and comprehensive coverage, your out-of-pocket is usually $0.
The five-step claim process
- Take a photo of the damage — you'll need it.
- Call your insurer or use their app to start a glass claim.
- Tell them which glass shop you want — you have the right to choose in Alberta.
- Get a claim number and pass it to the glass shop.
- Show up to your appointment — the shop handles paperwork and bills the insurer directly.
